fall back

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

{photo credit}

found this poem through emma jane's blog. what beautiful words. she is quite talented. fall is my favorite season for so many reasons, and i think she hits the nail on the head. read on.

i felt the fall air today
for the first time this year.
summer set,
fall tiptoed in through
the back door,
softly,
almost unnoticed.

she brushed past the kitchen,
she strayed down the stairs,
she gussied up in the mirror in the hall.

she didn't knock as she
pushed in sideways through
my bedroom door,
barely clearing the crack.

i sighed in my sleep,
briefly stirring as she
kissed my forehead
and held my hand.

"everything is starting again,
my love. everything will change.
everything will grow as
the leaves drift down to sleep
on loamy, grassy beds.
the pieces will fall back into place,

your heart will heal and mend,
as the summer sun will end."

i smiled at her speech,
the kindness in her eyes.
"don't take too long, dear fall,
to bring my pieces back to me.
my bed is cold.
i don't want to feel the
winter chill
without his hand."

"winter was lonely and long,
spring was all pastels,
garish and sad.
summer was rash and hollow,
full of reminders and regret.

but i, my love, i blow the
leaves about, clear the dust
from strained and aching eyes.

fall is your shelter,
fall will bring you peace,
fall makes it all fall back,
the puzzle in your head and heart
finally solved.

sleep now, dear heart,
and do not dread the cold.
until your heart is back in his hand,
my hand won't leave your side."

as i slept
she brushed my hair,
sang me mountain hymns of
sprites and kings,
lionhearts and their maidens.

i dreamt of my lionheart,
our chilly days past
and future, falling into place
in her crisp gaze.

welcome fall.

state fair

went to the fair on saturday and consumed approximately 17,867 calories. it was worth every bite.

{photo credit: me}

we saw this prize pumpkin that weighed 522 pounds. crazy because this is exactly how much i weighed after eating fried cinnamon rolls on a stick, a giant turkey leg, a chocolate covered frozen banana, fried pickles, red velvet funnel cake with cream cheese frosting, and fried mac and cheese. 522 pounds.

this ride always reminds me of dave matthew's under the table and dreaming album. yes?

new friends! these two had never been to a state fair before which is why we had to try every delicious and crazy food possible. it's their fault i couldn't button my jeans the next day.

absent but not forgotten

well, hey. remember me? i have been MIA on the blog for a while, and i miss you guys.

the thing is, i've met someone. this month called september happened and we fell in love so quickly. it's been a whirlwind, and we've basically spent every waking moment together. this is what september and i have been up to lately...

an earring class at ornamentea. so much fun, and i made seven pairs of earrings to boot!

{photo credit: me}

wilmington/wrightsville day trip. the sun, the ocean, the palm trees, the huge plates of mexian food we ate for dinner. with that kind of combination how can you have a bad day? unless you're the scrooge or something.

{photo credit: me}

my roommate's 27th! ain't she something in that party hat, mom cardigan, and shiny bowling shoes? i am so blessed to have a bestie and roommate built into one convenient person. she's the best, and she doesn't judge me when i eat half a cheeseburger and spoonfuls of cool whip for dinner.

{photo credit: me}

weekend trip to dc. we stayed in georgetown, went wedding dress shopping with amy's old roommate, ate dinner at clyde's, and i got to have breakfast my good childhood friend rebecca at bread and chocolate. we also went to a wine fest in virginia and enjoyed lots of tasty samples including holiday spiced (christmas in your cup) and jalapeño wine. (oy! that one was a kick to the mouth). good times were had by all.

and this just happened today. our new couch is here! we were borrowing a couch from a friend, but when she moved and took it with her, i decided to become a real adult and invest in a couch to call my own. this part is important: it didn't come from goodwill. that's how much of an adult i am. now where did my bowl of my chocolate cocoa puffs with sugar star marshmallows go? i'm hungry.

sorry i've been absent. i'm still in the honeymoon stages with my new lover, autumn. soon enough we'll be tired of each other, and i'll be back with regular blog posts.

happy first day of fall

hello, fall.
where have you been?
summer overstayed his welcome once again.
(he is the worst. i think you would have to agree.)
anyways, i just wanted to leave you a little love note
and tell you that i think you are a dear.
you bring out the best in me.
i'm not the sweaty, crabby girl that summer always turns me into.
nope. i become a giddy schoolgirl when you roll into town.
you make me laugh nervously and say stupid things,
because i have a major crush on you.
is it weird to have a crush on a season?
don't answer that.
all my love,
lacey

p.s. you know that thing you do with the leaves?
when you turn them pretty colors?
i really love that.

fall fashion

in my opinion, fall is the most fun season to dress for. the sweltering heat of summer is over, and the cold winter winds haven't hit yet. the few weeks of cool weather allow light layers. you can get by with wearing dresses and tights without bundling up in a huge jacket and ear muffs. but who still wears ear muffs anyways? oh, you too? i knew i liked you.

i feel the most creative with my wardrobe when the weather becomes cool. the clothes in my closet look new and fresh because i can pair summery items with cardigans, light blazers, and my favorite skinny jeans. i can get away with short-ish skirts by pairing them with tall boots. almost any summer dress becomes appropriate for fall with white, textured tights.

here are a few stylish images that have me stoked for this season. can't wait to emulate these outfits with what i already own/what i find at tjmaxx and goodwill. that is, when i'm not wearing pajamas or my gym clothes.

scarf. you usually hide my cute belts, but i got tricks you ain't eva seen.

i love when socks come higher than the boot.
it's like, i did this on purpose. no, i didn't. yes, i did.

plaid anything is, like, so hot right now.

{photo credit}
pink shirt + striped skirt + just the right amount of
golden hour sunlight = the perfect fall outfit.
also, being blonde and tiny helps a hair.

{photo credit}
i pretty much have this outfit minus the short trench, the black clutch, the green plaid shirt, the green striped shirt, and her hair.

for those indian summer days. i love the mixing of patterns here. people are confused intimidated when you mix patterns. it's fun to intimidate confuse people. well, now i'm all messed up. it's one or the other.

heeeey, chiseled cheekbones. didn't i say plaid anything is so hot right now? yes, i did. exhibit a. the only way this picture could get any better is if he was wearing red plaid. and maybe if he was holding a sign asking me to dinner.

happy fall fashioning! what's your favorite thing about dressing for fall?
