the books of christmas

hope everyone had a wonderful christmas! i've been home since tuesday and pretty much all i've been doing is getting fed by my dynamic duo parents. they're both good cooks which is bad news for me since i hardly meet a food i don't like. dale bakes bread for breakfast. he hands the baton off to my mom who puts out a spread for lunch. they work in tandem for dinner creating bbq pork and parmesan noodles. i thought i escaped the freshman 15 in college, but it turns out it just shows up later in life and goes by a slightly different name. the christmas 20.

christmas morning was really wonderful spending time with the regulars-the parents and two brothers-and, this year, the lovely addition of my older brother's girlfriend. she put up with us and joined in on the shenanigans and made us the most potent and delicious bourbon balls. hashtag keeper.

i got a lot of fun pressies including a mini pie baker. did not know that existed in the world, but it's got me up late at night thinking of all of the different pies i want to try. in my half-sleepy state, things like dill and caramel sound good together when, in reality, they are not. i need to concoct recipes when i am awake and have at least two cups of coffee in my body/brain.

one of my favorite gifts this year was a big pile of books. my mom is a huge reader, and i try to follow in her footsteps. she has books lying around all over our house. sometimes i find them stashed under couch cushions because she runs out of room and has nowhere else to put them.

there are three in particular i am really excited to start, and i want to tell you about them! for the next three posts, i'm going to brief each book and explain why i'm excited to dig in. i started this out as one post, but the words just kept coming and the post was getting way too long. i mean, i appreciate a succinct post as much as (i assume) the next person does. so, stay tuned and maybe you'll discover a new book or author that you'd like to further investigate.

what was your favorite christmas memory from this year? your favorite gift given and received?

  1. How wonderfully you put all of that! And the Christmas 20 is definitely on it's way to me as well.... ugh! Favorite gift given: a mug with a quote that I wrote on for my sister. Favorite gift received: my TOMS boots, and a teacher bag full of school supplies. Well, that's two but Christmas was good to me this year :) I hope you have a wonderful new year!

    1. the christmas 20 can turn into the post-christmas 25. especially when you add leftover eggnog to your coffee (did it) and eat gravy and biscuits for brunch (did that, too). ah, well. that's why we love the holidays so much, right? the delicious food? your pressies sound wonderful! what did you use to write on the mug? what grade do you teach? i love getting gift bag type presents. so much fun to look through! thanks for stopping by and commenting. made my day. :-)

    2. Post-Christmas 25, hehe I like that... except for the fact that it means my butt needs to get to the gym! I just love the holidays though... such a wonderful time of year. I just wrote on the mug with a sharpie and baked it for 30 mins at 375--super easy and dishwasher safe :) And I'm actually student teaching in first grade right now, hopefully I'll have my own classroom next year!

  2. Oh my, the Christmas 20 gets me just about every year. It's all the baking! Ah!

Anyways, my favorite gift given would have to be concert tickets to see Young the Giant in February. It'll be his first real concert (he's 15), so I'm pretty pumped. My favorite gift received are some pretty hot air balloon plates from Anthropologie given to me from my husband. I'm obsessed!

    Happy New Year!

    1. darn the baking and all of it's baggage! (literal baggage. in the form of poundage). that concert is going to be so fun! their song "my body" is on every gym/running mix that i make. it's so perfect when i need an extra push. who are the tix for? your son? brother? those plates sound super cute! i love anthro but can only shop there when i have a gift card. haha. props to your husband! merry (belated) christmas and a happy new year! thanks for stopping by and commenting. exciting to hear from a new blogger! :-)

  3. I love books for Christmas! Well.. I love books all the time, but especially at Christmas. You can tell a lot about a person by what books they give you and what they like to read. Can't wait to hear which books you got this year!

    1. i thought you might appreciate this post. ;-) thanks to you and your beautifully written blog post, "the book thief" is on my book wish list. i've been looking for it on the shelves at goodwill when i'm on the hunt. if i can't find it eventually, i will buy it online, but it's kind of this fun game i'm playing with myself. haha. i'm excited to share the books! be on the lookout for my first post tomorrow. hope you had a GREAT christmas and are looking forward to 2014. :-) (did you get any books this far?)
