i'm not quite 30 (thank goodness), but this list by joy the baker is pretty dang awesome/helpful/humorous.

30 ain't old but it doesn't mean want to be 30 tomorrow. or the next day. or in a year. probably in two and one half years i will be ready. but maybe not even then. i might have a temper tantrum going into my 30th year. you've been warned.

sun and surf

this past weekend my roommate and i and several of our friends from south carolina met up at the beach for a couple of days. we spent a lot of time relaxing but also managed time for...

dining out local.
playing in the waves.
battling traffic with approximately 5 million bikers because it was bike week. of course it was.
mini golf.
homemade (from a box) sweet potato pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream for breakfast.
card games.
bud light lime.
morning run past the pier and back.
chicken fights in the pool.
blasting justin bieber with the windows down.
late night ocean swim.
shopping at the outlets.
sbux for the drive home.

the weather was overcast and chilly on saturday, but that was just fine with me. i love the beach when it's slightly cloudy and looks like a storm is brewing. it makes me feel like something exciting is about to happen.

our hotel balcony was on the 14th floor and overlooked the ocean. it was a pretty amazing view. the ocean is really good at putting me in my place. when i see how great and giant and vast it is, i feel pretty small. i realize that my life and my problems are not as big as i think they are. i am also reminded just how great and giant and vast God and His love for me are.

"how deep the Father's love for us,
how vast beyond all measure
that He should give His only Son
to make a wretch His treasure."

happy first mother's day to my sweet friend, sarah. you are the most awesome momma to baby parker. i'm a long way from wanting kiddos of my own, but you make me excited to have a little babe to cuddle with.

to all the mommies of the world, you are basically superheroes without capes. happy mother's day!

one time i was invited to a brunch. i was asked to bring something to share. i thought and thought. i opened cookbooks. i searched on pinterest. what would i make? oh dear.

then it hit me. everything's better with cheddar.

cheddar breakfast biscuits

{photo credit: me}

ingredients:
3 cups flour
1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 3/4 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
4 tablespoons butter (for melting)

preparation:
combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
pour in cream.

{photo credit}

add shredded cheese.
mix with spoon until all ingredients are just mixed together. do not overwork dough.
take dough from bowl and place on floured surface. form into mound.

{photo credit}

with hands or floured rolling pin, flatten into square about 1 inch thick.
use sharp knife to cut into squares.
(this is a perfect opportunity to practice being barefoot in the kitchen.)

{photo credit: me}

place cut squares on prepared baking sheets.
melt butter in microwave and drizzle over tops of the biscuit squares.

{photo credit: me}

bake in oven at 375 degrees for 22-24 minutes or until tops of biscuits are golden brown.
remove from oven and let cool.
eat plain. eat with butter. eat with bacon. eat with eggs.
just eat.

scratch bakery

Sunday, May 6, 2012

{photo credit: me}

this is how i spent my sunday morning. reading, drinking coffee, and eating a delicious and cheap milano cookie ($1!) at scratch bakery in downtown durham. perfection.

{photo credit: me}

{photo credit: me}

to go, i also ordered a drink called the sweet child o mine. espresso, cold milk, honeysuckle.

{photo credit: me}

it was totally different than any coffee drink i have ever tasted. hot on top because of the espresso but cold underneath because of the cool milk. they recommended drinking it with no lid because you lose the combination of tastes. the honeysuckle gave it a slightly sweet, slightly citrusy flavor. it sounds weird, but it was beyond amazing. the only bad thing is that it was gone in about four sips. more more more.

sunday funday. what did you do today?
