beautiful things

i've always been attracted to the beauty in simplicity: pretty paintings, soft shades of pink, grey, blue, green, the giddy feeling when i hold a piece of real mail addressed to me, dishes with gold flecks that catch the sunlight.

cold, crisp air in my lungs, the way a curtain flutters in the breeze, nails painted red, the ocean at daybreak, a gold bracelet on the arm, the scent of christmas trees, a folded scarf the color of mustard.

the sky set ablaze at sunset, a latte with swirled foam, stacks of books, sitting with a friend not saying a word, night swimming, thick cut fries, falling into a clean bed after a long day, freshly sharpened pencils.

what are your simple beauties?

  1. A cardinal in a winter-white tree, creamer mixing into coffee, the back of my son's precious head when he's intently working on something, the sight of my husband's loving face at the end of a long day, happy-colored coats and wellies. And oh, the list could go on ...

    1. i love seeing little kids stick their tongues out when they concentrate. they're so serious about coloring. i will also agree that wellies in bright colors make rainy days totally worth it.

  2. This reminds me of the Sound of Music "Favorite things" song! Love the simple beauties in life.

  3. the sweet sound of coffee brewing, bright green vines traveling along a wet brick wall, the flickering light of a burning candle, crashing waves on a cloudy day, half asleep morning cuddles, patterned pillows mixed just right, the sun warming up my skin on an otherwise brisk day, the sound of the wind rustling in the trees.

.. inevitably followed by "these are a few of my favorite things" :)

  4. any little toddler in a fairy costume, the smell of fresh baked bread, the sound of wind chimes, leaves dancing across the wet pavement, my husband morning kiss, rows and rows of books at a used bookstore, my children laughing together, white lights, an old couple holding hands, any sweet child in glasses, the california desert at sunrise. what a wonderful idea for all us readers to reflect. oh and one more, my dear daughter running to give me a hug!

    1. i know, right! i don't need bright lights or a fancy night out on the town. pour me a glass of wine and watch an episode of parks and rec with me, and i'm one happy girl.
